A few notes about the kit: it is int he store now for just $41.99.  If you use your coupon code (September's is 20% off), that makes the price just $33.60.  Now the average kit price out there is $28-$35, but you don't get step by step video instruction and email support from the teacher!  So for just $5 more, with this kit, you can get that!  This is really quite the bargain... just like we wanted it to be (we are shoppers too, you know! :)  I created this album, 2 cards, and 1 more layout out of my kit, and I have a few more things leftover to use later.

Ok, so there you have it!  I have one more free 1-month subscription to give away, and you will be entered to win it by leaving me a comment and telling me (1) what you think of the class, and (2) which teacher you are most hoping comes to STT.

Tomorrow I will have some upcoming teachers to announce... and sometime tomorrow (Friday) the STT site will go LIVE, ad you will be able to access it and see the class!  Anyone else excited?  I promise to post here the SECOND it is ready, so be stalking on Friday!

~Alyssa~

The winner from Sept 26th's post is:

Stash to Treasure Questions (and Answers!)

**Please scroll down for all the info on the Travel Album Class Kit**

Hello, ladies!  Because of all your wonderful comments and questions in yesterdays post, I decided to move the schedule up a day and answer as many questions as possible today.  (isn't that nice of me?  :))  So, first up is the FAQ's.  My next post will be the October class details!

Q. What inspired you to start Stash to Treasure?
A. Both of us (Erica and Alyssa) have many years experience in the scrapbook industry.  When we started discussing classes and the feedback we were getting from customers and other scrappers, it became obvious that there wasn't much content that was meeting two specific needs: (1) affordable classes for those who don't want kits, and (2) high-quality class materials available to anyone, anywhere.  So, Stash to Treasure was born to meet those needs.

Q; How do subscriptions work?
A: We have 3 different options for you (1 month, 3 months, or 6 months).  With each option, your monthly payment of just $5 will be deducted from your PayPal account, for as long as the subscription that you choose.  At the end of your subscription, you get to choose a new option (or the same one) and sign up again!

Q. Why should I choose the 6-month option?
A: If you choose the 6-month option, you will receive $5 in Stash Cash to deduct from your next order.  It's like getting one month free!

Q: Do you offer the option to "skip a class?"
A: Not at this time.  We do offer month-to-month subscriptions, so if you want to decide about each class as it is announced, just subscribe using the one month option.

Q. Do you offer refunds?
A. Unfortunately, no.  We are paying our designers to bring you the best classes, and so we need to make sure that their content and ideas are protected and fairly compensated.

Q. If I subscribe for 6 months, can I cancel?
A. Yes you can cancel at any time.  Subscribing for 6 months offers you the benefit of not having to go through the subscription process again each month, but you can cancel in the middle of a 3 or 6 month subscription if you wish.

Q. Where do I find info on upcoming classes?
A. We will be posting that info as soon as it becomes available on both the Your Scrapbook Stash blog and the Stash to Treasure site.

Q. How long will the class content and videos  be available?
A. Classes will be available for 6 months.  This gives you plenty of time to order the kit and work through the class along with the teacher.  Classes will be marked 1 week before they are removed, so that you will have some warning that they are almost expired.  Remember, though, that your subscription must be current to view any class, even older ones.

Q. How much will the kits cost?
A. Kits will be priced according to what is in them.  We add up the retail value and then give you a small discount.  You can also use the store coupon codes when they are available.

Q. What types of projects/classes will be offered at Stash to Treasure?
A. You name it, it will be here.  From layouts and page kits, to altered items, to home decor, to mini albums, we will be offering the classes for it!

Q. When will I be able to see the site?  I can't wait to get started!
A. The site is a brand new website created just for Stash to Treasure.  (Thanks to Alyssa's brother, Ryan Decker, for designing it for us!)  It is under construction, but is nearly ready and should be available sometime on October 1st.  Just as soon as it is live, we will post the URL here on the YSS blog.  Upgrades to the site will continue to happen throughout October, so you never know what new surprises you will find when you log in!  Certain parts of the site will be available to anyone, without a subscription.  But you will have to be a subscriber to see the class content.

Q. How does the subscription  process work?
A. After you subscribe via PayPal, you will receive an email with a generic password and your log-in information.  Once you log in for the first time, you will be able to change your password to anything you like that is easy for you to remember.  At the end of your subscription period, your access to the site will be removed unless you continue your subscription.

If you have other questions not answered here, please post them and I will answer them!

Other subscription related questions can be directed to admin@yourscrapbookstash.com

Stash To Treasure Kit and Subscription

*** We are taking a few days off for a family event.  The store will remain open but we will not be filling any orders.  Pre-Orders are being filled.  We are now shipping out anything from Studio Calico, Fancy Pants and Lily Bee.  Please be patient as we have a ton of pre-orders AND regular orders to fulfill.  Shipping will resume on 10/3/10.  ***

So now that you've read all about the kit and site, are you ready to get started?

The official Subscription page will be live on 10/1 BUT, if you are a blog follower, you can sign up now.  Thats right, we're including the links in this post for you to subscribe.  The kit is also in the store and ready for purchase.  We've created a special section called 'Stash to Treasure Kits' where all present and past kits will be listed.

There are two fun things to share about this kit.  If you have a Bind it All, you can add more pages to this album.  Because it is a mixed medium book, you can add more canvas, acrylic or chipboard pages.  Even transparencies work!  You will have leftovers - enough to create more mini album pages, layouts, card or altered projects.

Here are some detail shots for you.  *please note - you will get 7 double sided sheets of Basic Grey Wander papers in this kit.  Fir the purposes of showing you the B side, we took this photo with 2 sheets of each paper to show you the 'entire' kit.  You are only getting one sheet of each paper listed.*

Kit Contents:

- Punky Sprouts Junk in my Punk album
- Wander Papers : Turbulence, Relocate, Hub, Vroom, Metropolis, Bike Messenger and Gridlock
- Stop/Go Doily
- Wander Pieces (not shown)
- Wander Rubons
- Wander Elements Stickers
- 1 Yard brown trim, 1 foot red trim
- Shabby Chic Crafts Vintage Snapshots
- Basic Grey Oliver and Olivia Mini Monograms
- Jenni Bowlin Chalkboard Alpha - Black
- Maya Road chipboard alpha
- 2 Maya Road Kraft envelopes

Mists/Paints used: (not required to finish album)

Maya Road Mist - Evergreen Metallic, Lemon & Cherry
Smooch Paints - Lime and Siren
Shimmerz - Chick-a-dee

Kits can be purchased in the Shop. (Item #9117)  We will ship these on 10/4/10.

Now for the fun part!  The extras.  Alyssa not only included some basic, written instructions with your kit, she also filmed videos and will post extra content on the new Stash to Treasure site.  So for those of you NOT interested in the kit, you can follow along at home and use your Stash OR buy your kit from the store and 'do your own thing'.  Remember, you will have leftovers and we'll show you fun things to do with these.

Stash to Treasure Reveal!

Good Morning!  Are you ready to hear more about Stash to Treasure?  Well, it's finally time to give you the whole scoop.  The website is nearly ready, the first class is prepared, and it's time to share all our little secrets with you!

Here's how it will work: Each month, we will be bring you a full class from a leading teacher in the industry.  I can't share many names with you just yet, but I can tell you that the teacher lineup is amazing!  These teachers have some of the most creative brains on the planet, and one or two of them will be sharing all of that with you each month.

Each class will be posted throughout the first week of the month, and follow (roughly) this format:
  • One "Main" video each day, detailing that day's portion of the project.
  • One additional video each day, detailing a technique and providing step-by-step instructions so you can recreate it.
  • One photo tutorial each day with yet ANOTHER technique, or a list of tips related to a design technique that they are using.
In addition to roughly 12 videos and 6 tutorials, you will also get additional exclusive content throughout the remainder of the month.  Things like exclusive sketches, subscribers-only giveaways, more tutorials, fun challenges, and other DIY projects are all in the works.   Now, some classes might be formatted differently depending on the project we will be bringing you, but that is the general idea of what you can expect.  Sweet, huh?!  :)

Each class will have a kit that corresponds to it, so you can follow along and recreate the teacher's project exactly.  Kits will be available in the YSS store (and you WILL be able to use your coupon codes on them). Or, if you prefer, you can just subscribe to Stash to Treasure and follow along with the class using items from your stash.

Now, here is the best part: Stash to Treasure subscriptions are only $5 per month.  Yes, that's right... you get all that content from top-notch teachers for just $5 per month!

Subscriptions will be available on Friday!  Thursday I will bring you the FULL reveal of my Travel Album Class, the very first Stash to Treasure Class that will be posted in October.

Ok, so leave me a comment and let me know what you think, and one lucky commenter will get the first month free (which means you will get my entire class for free!).

Can't wait until Thursday!

Other Rules: You MUST use the Mr. Linky links to share with the class.  Feel free to upload to our User Gallery and share with everyone, just come back and link it up here.

Prizes will be mailed out to the two winners after the contest has ended.  They include a box FULL of goodies AND $10.00 in Stash Cash.

Stash Faves

My Stash Faves for this week is Echo Park's Life is Good line.

This manufacturer just started a few months ago but I can definitely say that they are now one of my favorite. Their line is so versatile and fun to work on. It is so easy to use everyday photos and just play around with the colors and embellishments. This is why Echo Park is starting to mark its place in the scrapbook industry.

Here is a layout that I made using this collection:
Check out the YSS Store for this products! I highly recommend it!

Photographing Your Layouts

When I just started scrapbooking I thought that the process of creating a page was the hardest part, but I found photographing my finished layout more difficult because I was having a hard time capturing the real look of my page. The color was off, the alignment was slanted, and the photograph looks so different from the actual layout.

As I have tried several cameras I found out that the main key to get a good photograph of your layout is LIGHTING. Here are some tips that I have read and discovered:
  • the best time to photograph your layout outdoors is 1hr after sunrise and 1hr before sunset. This is the ideal time of the day because the sunlight is not that strong and the brightness is just right.
  • when taking photos indoors, take a photo in the afternoon when the sun is so bright. Find a room that has enough light. Make sure that the wall painting is white because colored rooms bounce back the colors to the layout.
  • you can also use a white cardboard to bounce the sunlight.Simply locate the sunlight in your room. Position the cardboard directly to the sunlight to bounce the light towards your layout.
  • if you want to use an artificial layout, create your own mini lightbox. You can find the intructions here: HOMEMADE LIGHT BOX. If I have time I definitely will make me one of those.
  • never photograph your layout using your flash or putting your layout directly to the sunlight! This will create strong shadows or the light might bounce back on the photo of your layout if you have used a glossy photo paper.
POSITIONING of your layout is very essential too. This will make it easier for you to crop your image later on using a photo editor software. Here are some tips on positioning your layouts
  • you can adhere your layout on a wall at eye-level
  • you can also use a photo stand
  • or simply place your photo on the floor
  • before taking a photograph of your layout, imagine a grid on the view box of your camera. Make sure that the spaces on all sides is parallel to the layout.

CAMERA. I think the best results is with a digital camera, preferably an DSLR camera like the Canon Digital Rebel. But if you don't have one it is okay to use a regular digital camera keeping in mind that the quality is different when using a DSLR. With good lighting you can still get a very decent photo of your layout.
  • Set your camera to Auto Depth of Field setting and shoot. The auto depth of field keeps all elements equally important visually, which makes the text and photographs all stay focused.
  • Use a tripod if your speed is below 100 to make your photo sharp.
  • ISO must be set not higher than 400. The higher the ISO the greater chance of getting grains-look on your photograph
  • Instead of just taking one photo of your layout, take several. It's easy to delete anyway. This will allow you to capture the perfect photo.
PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE. After photographing your layout, it is still important to add some minor adjustment to your photograph by using some photo editing software. I actually use 2 software, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Usually I use Lightroom to edit the colors because it has the capability to adjust the colors individually unlike Photoshop. If you edit a color on Photoshop it will adjust the entire photo and make it all green for example. In Lightroom it only adjust the green colors thus you can make it more vibrant or pale. I do them first on Lightroom then I just do the cropping or cleaning(removing spots) on Photoshop.

Whatever photo editor software you use, just adjust the levels, brightness, contrast or color balance to get your desired outcome. Crop it! I suggest you place your layout near you so that you can use it as guide as you do some adjustment. Make it look like as close to the actual layout.

"My Home is With You" layout by LG Belarmino - Echo Park Life is Good collection and Shimmerz Paints

You're done! You can now upload your layout online!

Hope I was able to help you get an idea on how I photograph my layouts.

September Guest Designer Sketch Challenge

I found Julie Bonner's 52 Sketches 52 Weeks blog a while back and I fell in love with her style of sketches.

She was one of the first people on my 'potential guest designer' list last year when I added this to the site.

I was thrilled when she said yes!

So how about a little challenge with the Sketch she provided this month?  A little extra challenge other than the current contests we have open?

Upload any layout or card using her sketch for a chance to win a $10 Stash Cash certificate and a prize pack from the store.

Go ahead and post a link on this post to where your idea is.  Remember, you can upload all of your challenge and contest ideas to our new User Gallery for our entire community to enjoy!

Don't forget to check out Julies blog all month long for even more chances to win Stash Cash!

Studio Calico

Just an update for everyone waiting on this....
They are not ready to ship some of the embellishments.  I have asked them to go ahead and ship what IS available so that we can begin shipping your orders.

We will get these out to you as quickly as we can.
A little birdie just told me that UPS will be dropping off some boxes from Sassafras before the day is out so we will be sending out the new Sass lines this week!

Altered Tag Mini Class

I love My Tattered Angels glimmer mists and Tim Holtz' stamps and one of the best ways to experiment and have fun with them is through altering tags. Here's how I altered mine.

I started off with some large manila tags. Mine are about 6" x 3".

I misted the tags with the new Fall colours from My Tattered Angels:

I then inked the edges using Rangers distress inks for definition:

Now for some stamping. I chose a couple of my favourite foliage Tim Holtz stamps and stamped these on the tags as a background:

Next, I stamped and heat embossed my main images in black so they would stand out better. I like how heat embossed images add texture to a layout too. The butterfly stamp and Dream quote stamp are a couple of my favourites from Tim Holtz.

And here's how my completed tag looks:

And here's how my tags look with some hand-dyed ribbons I made myself. I like how each tag is completely unique because the mists are all different.

I hope you enjoyed the mini tutorial. Do share with us your altered tags on the YSS gallery.

If you'd like to re-create a similar tag, check out the YSS store for mists, stamps and inks. YSS will be bringing in the latest Fall glimmer mist colours from My Tattered Angels, as well as those beautiful Tim Holtz rubber stamps. Distress inks are already available in the store now. If you'd like anything you don't see in the store, just let Erica know and she'll do a special order for you.
