Tutorial - Christmas Mini Album

It's only 3 months before Christmas. So have you started on last year's Christmas photos ? Here is a tutorial for a Christmas album for those photos or make one so you will be ready for this Christmas pictures.

To begin you need to select the cardstock color of your choice. I cut my longest page first. This album will be 4X6" when completed. Cut out a 4X6" piece from your selected cardstock. I use my edge punch to cut one edge of the page. You can use decorative scissors instead.

For the next page, using the previous page as a reference, I cut my paper a little shorter so that the decorative edge can be seen. Use the same or a different edge punch or decorative scissors to cut the edge off the second page.

Carry on with the next page until you have 4 inside pages for your album. Next I sprayed my pages with mist for added texture. You could also ink the edges of your album pages.

Now it's time to add the pretty papers. For my album I used Cosmo Cricket's Jolly Be Golly papers.

To achive a patchwork look for my pages, I cut small pieces from my pattern paper and inked the edges.

Next I arranged the placement of the pieces until I'm pleased with the way they look. Glue the pieces in place. To add to the patchwork look, I used my sewing machine to add some stitching to the paper.

Here is another view of the patchwork arrangement.

To complete the album, cut 2 pieces of cardstock or pattern papers to 4X6". I punched 2 holes into each piece of the album and joined all together with the rings.

Have fun. You can view more of my completed album at my gallery.

Cheers,
June

Need some fresh mojo

Many times when I scrap and I feel a little low on mojo, I turned to the tried and tested design theory. The "VISUAL TRIANGLE"........ Honestly this is real simple and you can add layers or more stuff. New scrappers find this easy to follow while 'seasoned' scrappers needs to go back to this simple rule sometimes.

What is a visual triangle? This means placing the elements in a triangle around the layout. It creates a virtual boundary for the eye, linking all the layout elements together. That's why some LOs looks so balanced and well put together.

Here are some I did:
See the 3 circle yellow elements. They pull the whole LO into the centre.

See the colour RED in the alphas "Antiques"....... in the vintage metal frame (a piece of red CS) and the RED blings at the top left. Using colour in a visual triangle helps too.

Here is another using all hand made flowers. See where I placed them. They formed a triangle.

Here is my fav, using different elements but the colours BLACK to form a triangle. See the black alpha (HAVING), Black butterfly transparency and a little black CS to back the bird at the top left.

So the fun part is you can use the same elements (like flowers) or colours and same shaped elements to form your visual triangle. Have fun!

Stash Faves - Guest Designer April Yap

Whenever I see her work, I get excited.  Its one of the reasons I chose her for Guest Designer this month.

I am living in the "Garden City" - Singapore, with my DH. We live in a cozy home with 3 kids (Sarah-14, Glenn-10, and Kean-8) and a cutest toy poodle (Minnie-1). I have been teaching Chinese in a preschool for more than 13 years!

I am honored to be in the Design Team at Inspired Blueprints (http://inspiredblueprints.typepad.com/) and All About Me (http://itsallaboutmechallenge.blogspot.com/).

Product you can't live without - There are too many products that I LOVE, and the list can go on and on. But one product that I MUST have is patterned paper!

When are you most creative and why? - There isn't a specific time when I am most creative. I often feel like playing and creating, everyday. Whenever I have time, I will pull out photos and start choosing pp and products. Sometimes it took me two days to complete one layout and I'm fine with that.

Favorite Manufacturer - Cosmo Cricket is my all time favorite!! And of course there are many more, such as MME, 7G, Making Memories, Sassafras...

Other hobbies besides scrapping? - Reading magazines is something I do a lot besides scrapping. I also love baking and photo taking.

Describe your style - Mixing different products from different manufacturers is a fun scrapping process for me. I love creating clusters of embellies and leaving lots of white space in my layouts.

Do you have a scrap room, space, corner? - My DH created a scrap corner in the living room for me. I have everything (from my laptop, photo printer, camera to magazines, patterned papers, stamps, embellies) I need within reach when I am scrapping. I can be a messy scrapbooker at times, but I am sure to pack up after every project.

Favorite color combo - Depending on the photos and the mood I want to create, I love playing and trying out different color combos.

Favorite non-scrap related store - IKEA! It just feel like home to me!

Before I started scrapping, I used to make tags and cards for occassions like birthdays, Christmas, Childrens' Day, Teachers' Day... Two years ago I was being asked to design birthday cards for all the staffs in my school (more than 30 of us). Everyday I spent hours making cards after coming home from work. My effort was greatly appreciated, and everyone loved my cards. After that I was hooked, I wanted to create somemore, everyday. So I started scrapping. I am so seriously addicted to it now!!

A Simple Album

Sometimes I wonder what to do with these cute mini chipboard album. I love them alot but I may not have a lot of time. Yet I want them as presents for friends.

Pasting paper over them and then cutting them to size will be very tedious.

Sometimes I just want to do a quick and easy album for a friend, in less than 2 hours.

Here is how i go past these shapes:

1) First I paint the edges... about half an inch inward.

2) With just 1 sheet of paper, I cut some circles. These will fill the album.

3) Since this paper (From Scenic Route) is a double sided paper, it serves 2 purpose. 1 side for journaling(I love stripes for that) and the other is a for matting photos. Simple and quick.

4) Just add photos..... I cut some simple words and flowers and circles for embellishments from scrap paper. That's how affordable we can make these gifts.

5)I added a hambly grid for the front, Scenic Route alpha stickers for the cover. Some buttons

This makes a nice gift for my friend. Since she is a busy mother, and a non scrapper, she really likes it. I left it 'half finished' so she can add in journaling, some buttons, some flowers, some little words here and there.

And I did this album in under 2 hours.

Try it and you can 'mass make' these shaped album for friends, relatives and family. Just 1 album, 1 sheet of paper and some paints. That's so wallet friendly! Yet such a personalized and thoughtful gift. Hint... hint... many of these Maya Road albums are marked down now.

We can prepare early for Christmas. LOL!
